Earlier this school year, 8th graders were given the opportunity to take an optional national history exam that focused on all areas of history.  It was a multiple choice test which was taken online, with the highest scores in the region qualifying for the regional competition.
DCDS qualified 12 students for the regional competition which was held earlier this month.  Of those 12 students, we had 5 students score high enough to qualify the for the national competition which will be held in June.
Please join me in congratulating:
  • Christopher Davis '22
  • Noah Michaelson '22
  • Ramzi Nassif '22
  • Arvin Pandiyan '22
  • Abhi Reddy '22
These students also qualified for the US Geography Olympiad while at the regional competition.  Quite an impressive day for Country Day.  With only 17 students representing the state of Michigan and DCDS having 5 qualifiers, it's pretty cool.

"Earth Day Seed Bombing" - An Environmental Stewardship Project

Congratulations to 7th grade student Isabella Cook for taking the initiative to plan, research, and carryout a special environmental project she called “Earth Day Seed Bombing”.  Seed bombing (also called Guerilla Bombing) is a way of spreading native wildflowers to neglected areas that have room for plants to grow. For example, neglected parks, the side of the road, empty lots, etc.  Seed bombs are also great for areas like the banks of the rivers (like the Rouge) because the wildflower roots prevent erosion and also keep fertilizers and other chemicals from seeping into the river.

The seed bombs were delivered to others through Isabella's local network including: neighbors whose homes are nears the Rouge River, her church group, and Girl Scouts.  For Isabella, the most rewarding thing about her project was the increased interest and awareness others had in the seed bombs. Many asked Isabella for advice in making seed bombs and others asked for seeds to spread in abandoned lots in Detroit.

We would like to congratulate Isabella for her role in environmental stewardship and will honor her in May.
