Since our Centennial in 2015, we have made April Celebrating Service month by sharing the many community service projects our alumni, students, faculty, coaches and families have participated in during the past year. As of yesterday, you may have noticed a pop-up on our home and login pages of the dcds.edu website linking to this year's stories. We encourage you to read about the many wonderful community service activities in which our DCDS community is involved and perhaps take this opportunity to participate and/or launch your own community service project.

Here is a link to the first two stories.

Students begin preparation for composing poetry by first studying musical composers in first grade. Along with learning about the passions, struggles, and influences of the musicians, the students also hear about the trials and errors in writing music. To compliment their combined study of poetry and music, the second graders were given the task of trying to create their own piece. Students worked together to:

  1. write a four-line limerick
  2. add meters and tonalities used in class
  3. create a bass line
  4. implement texture with the use of non-pitched percussion
  5. then finally made a melody for their limerick
In the end, the students performed a short poetic song about the color of a crayon.

As part of the third grade unit immigration unit, students read the novel "Orphan of Ellis Island" in social studies and present information or act in a class play about an immigrant about whom they learned. They also sing songs that celebrate cultures and languages from around the world. These songs included the languages of Swahili, German, Hebrew, Arabic, Korean, as well as songs about peace, friendship, and inspiration. There was also the added touch of a famous Motown melody. The third grade strings players performed “Sourwood Mountain” as a small ensemble.

Ms. Tiano wanted to encourage her reading group students to spend less time on electronic devices, so after having a group discussion on other ways to use their imaginations to play or create something, they decided to initiate a Reading Nook Challenge. Each student and their families were challenged to create their own Reading Nook at home. Once their Reading Nook was created at home, the students brought in a picture to share their creation with the class. Below are pictures of the home Reading Nooks.

The classes voted on their three favorite nooks. All participants received goodies for their participation.

The combined bands from the Junior, Middle, and Upper Schools premiered a newly commissioned work titled "The Artist Within." The piece was a representation of the trials and celebrations of the artist within all of us. This pieced was written and conducted by composer, Joshua V. Hinkel.

Mr. Hinkel serves as the Associate Director of Bands at River Bluff High School in Lexington, South Carolina. Ensembles under his direction have received superior ratings at festivals as well as numerous regional, state and circuit championships. In constant demand as a composer and arranger, his works for band can be heard from the concert halls of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to the performing venues of Drum Corps International, Winterguard Internationals and Bands of America. Mr. Hinkel has spent the week leading up to Celebrate the Arts working with our students on this piece.

To see commissioned piece performed view the video of Grand Finale. The commissioned piece introduction, composer comments, and performance starts around the 43 minute mark. - See video
