Stormtrooper Visits Lower School

Alan Tong '84 spends part of his time as a Stormtrooper and is a Star Wars novelty visitor for schools and special events. He entertained the Lower School students and Headmaster Shilling was eager to show the children his senior picture from when he was a student here.


Two Students are Siemens Semifinalists

The Siemens Competition is the nation’s premier competition in math, science and technology for high school students. Every year, students submit innovative individual and team research projects to regional and national levels of competition as they vie for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 up to $100,000. This year, out of the 1860 submissions, 491 students were selected as semifinalists. This select group of semifinalists and their notable projects are judged to determine who advances to 6 regional competitions held in November. Individual and team winners of the regional contests earn the opportunity to compete in the National Finals held at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in December where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000.

Middle School National Geography Contest

The classroom winners from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade competed in our Middle School National Geography Bee championship round.  The questions this year for the final round were unusually challenging.  However, in the final round, three students emerged showcasing a solid understanding of U.S. and World Geography.

HOSA Regional Competition Results

HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education). Its mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

We had a very successful regional conference at Oakland University last Saturday.  Forty-four students (39 US and 5 MS) competed and 33 qualified for the state conference! 

We competed against 800 other students from 14 other schools in our area.

Over 60 DCDS Middle and Upper School students helped host at our Thirteen Mile Campus over 400 high school student vocal musicians from around the region. Mr. Weiler received compliments throughout the two-day event from visiting teachers and adjudicators about how intelligent, polite, professional, and energetic our students are!

*Melissa Beyrand also played the violin for both Bella Voce and Choral-Aires, in addition to participating in MSBOA festival in Brighton on Saturday morning, where she also earned multiple Division I ratings!


We had a student-run ensemble consisting of Sahil Suneja '19, Ricky Warnicke '19, Isabelle Bepler '19, and Melissa Beyrand '18 perform two Acapella pieces and earned a Division I rating.


Also, Choral-Aires performed at High School Solo & Ensemble Festival at the end of January and earned a solid Division II rating. 

Middle School Students Selected for District 4 Honors Band

Six Middle School students were selected to be a part of the MSBOA District 4 Middle School Honors Band this year. They will rehearse and perform a concert on Saturday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. in Milford High School. The band consists of about 120 students from all over District 4 (Oakland and part of Livingston Counties).

Regional Scholastic Art Award Winners

Congratulations to all our Upper and Middle School students who recently received recognition for their art pieces entered in the Regional Scholastic Art competition. This year, more than 6,400 individual entries were submitted for the 7th-12th grades.  Our Middle School received the most awards at the middle level in both Southeastern and the thumb region of Michigan. All Gold Key work will now be juried at the national level and national winners will be announced in March.

Winning artists will be invited for the award ceremony on Tuesday, February 6 at the Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Scholastic Art Exhibit will be open before and after the ceremony. In addition, it will remain open through March 2 at the College for Creative Studies Walter B Ford II Building, Ford Campus.

Junior School Snowman Contest

Just before all the snow melted this weekend, the Junior School Houses had a snowman building contest. Each house was extremely creative, with one building animals, another using their character trait as a theme, and a third using personal snow gear to enhance their snowman. All had a blast working together.

Spectrum 2017 Wins Award from NCTE

Spectrum, the literary magazine for the Upper School, has again this year received an award from the National Council of Teachers of English. The magazine was selected to receive a rank of Recommended for Highest Award in the Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines.

 

The magazine is created  under the direction of Mrs. Beverly Hannett-Price. 

Editors-in-chief from last year were Anusha Mamidipaka and Sophia Zhang.

Associate editors were Amanda Bradley and Lorraine Yuen.

World Read Aloud Day at the Lower School

On Thursday, February 1 the Lower School Hamlet was a buzz with reading activity. The teachers read aloud some of their favorite books to classes. Students Compete and Qualify for State MATHCOUNTS Competition

On Saturday February 3, ten Middle School students competed at the Oakland County Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition. Christopher Bernitsas '22, Charlie Chen '23, Jordan Dong '22, Nicholas Frieler '23, Vikram Goddla '24, Nishan Inampudi '24, Eddy Wang '24,Jay Xiao '22, Margaret Yang '22, and Himani Yarlagadda '23 did a wonderful job competing against 150 top mathletes in Oakland County. Himani and Christopher scored in the top 10, making it to the countdown round and advancing to the State competition on March 10 in East Lansing. Congratulations to all of our competitors!


Students Recognized at Model United Nations Conference

The Model UN club attended the University of Chicago Model United Nations Conference on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4. With 2,500 students participating, DCDS had a great showing for our representation of Albania. Due to the number of participants, many students worked in pairs on the committees. Ruhi Nayak '19 and Julie Jaipati '19 won Outstanding Delegate for their work in the Social and Humanitarian Committee. Grace Endrud '20 and Nick Sicilia '19 won Outstanding Delegate on the Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, while Brian Hu '18 earned Honorable Mention in NATO.

Congratulations to all our Upper and Middle School students who recently received recognition for their art pieces entered in the Regional Scholastic Art competition. This year, more than 6,400 individual entries were submitted for the 7th-12th grades.  Our Middle School received the most awards at the middle level in both Southeastern and the thumb region of Michigan. All Gold Key work will now be juried at the national level and national winners will be announced in March.

Winning artists will be invited for the award ceremony on Tuesday, February 6 at the Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Scholastic Art Exhibit will be open before and after the ceremony. In addition, it will remain open through March 2 at the College for Creative Studies Walter B Ford II Building, Ford Campus.
