As part of our school's continuing efforts to create professional partnership experiences in the arts, some students from the DCDS Honors Symphonic Orchestra had the unique opportunity to work with musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Experiences such as these have proven to be immensely beneficial to our students and provide a networking opportunity with individuals whose profession is in the arts. From the DSO we had -

Strings - violinist - Alexandros Sakarellos

Strings - cellist - Abraham Feder

Brass - trombonist - David Binder

The next phase of the Vivid Campaign is officially underway following our groundbreaking ceremony with the Hamlet children. Speaking at the event was Headmaster Shilling, Terry Barr '86, and Robert Parker '91, who are both trustees, alumni, and current parents. All shared their personal perspectives and enthusiasm with this phase of the project. Also, in attendance were trustees Jonathan Aaron, Danialle Karmanos, and Anne Weiner.

Another exciting moment was when the Zandstra family posed with a large crane and Mr. Zandstra, who bought the right to tear down a wall in the silent auction at the Vivid Occasion held last spring, took his job seriously and knocked down a significant area of the old section of the Lower School.

Here are some articles from media coverage of the event:

Jefferson Lecture Series

The U/S History Department hosted distinguished lecturer Dr. Erin Dwyer at its annual Jefferson Lecture Series. Before a near capacity audience at the Eisenberg Studio Theatre, Dr. Dwyer spoke on the unique relationship between Thomas Jefferson and the enslaved Sally Hemings. Dr. Dwyer admitted that historical written evidence and language eludes the true nature of their relationship that began when Hemings was 14 years old and had accompanied Jefferson's daughter to live with Jefferson in Paris (Jefferson was 44). According to Dwyer, the relationship, a source of scandal and potential liability during and long after Jefferson's presidency, is a vivid reminder of the need to encourage free and critical inquiry into the complexity of our history. Jefferson believed that 'early American republicanism will be an engine of moral progress'; Dr. Dwyer suggested that the duality of Jefferson's behavior hinted that the progress would not be quick or without considerable affliction.

The annual Lincoln Lecture Series will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. More information will be sent in February. The event is free, so mark your calendars to attend!

Fall Scavenger Hunt Fun

Going on a fall scavenger hunt can be a lot of fun, especially when you get to travel by bus to the "big kids school." That's what our PK3 students had the chance to do last week. The PK3 classes hunted for items on a list while trying to incorporate the use of all senses except taste. They were led by a group of Upper School students from an English composition class who had just finished lessons on enhancing their descriptive language. The older students led the younger students through the woods outside the Thirteen Mile Road and Hillview Campuses where they stopped to gather items for their scavenger hunt and then encouraged the kids to use descriptive words pertaining to the four out of five senses about the item they had found. All in all, it was a beautiful day and the kids had a lot of fun together!

The DCDS Global Initiatives Program aims to prepare students for life with an educational experience that is beyond a desk, beyond the classroom, and beyond the walls of a single institution. It is a challenging program geared for students who seek to learn, engage, and contribute to broader, more diverse global contexts. The comprehensive program prepares students to develop as active, informed, and empathetic global citizens.

There are three components to the Global Initiatives Program, and students may choose the component with which they feel most comfortable. The three components are:

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE This 2-year program provides juniors and seniors with a balanced education in six specific subject areas. The international standardized program promotes geographical and cultural mobility and can translate into college credit.
GLOBAL SCHOLARS Science, history, English, and world language courses which have a global emphasis are the core components of this program. Students have the opportunity to travel abroad and/or host students from another country. They will earn a Global Scholars or Global Scholars with Distinction designation on their DCDS diploma.
GLOBAL COMMUNITY Students have the opportunity to travel and host students from DCDS’ sister schools in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain. This program promotes international understanding, cultural immersion, and places a focus on world languages.

Junior School students had a busy morning escorting 400 grandparents and special friends to their various classes in the new section of the Hillview Campus. Throughout the morning guests traveled to three different classes with their students: math group, language arts and a special subject area which included art, music, physical education, French or science. Some activities that the guests experienced in the various classrooms were:

  • Math = guests tried their hand at problem solving or math games
  • Science = in small groups built structures using spaghetti noodles or pipe cleaners to create the tallest structure
  • Music = groups were heard warming up their voices and bodies to practice singing holiday concert music.
  • Art = students and guests drew birds or designed cars.
  • Language Arts = every student made an oral presentation dedicated to their guest.
The guests enjoyed exploring all our new spaces and seeing how teaching and learning are being implemented in our new school. The children took great pride in showing off their school. We had a morning full of smiles, hugs, and laughter that spanned many generations. Enjoy some pictures from the day, more pictures are on Vidigami under the Junior School group and within each grade level.

These two candidates came to the Seligman Performing Arts Center and provided the senior American Government classes an opportunity to hear their platforms and campaign stump speeches. Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and voice their opinions of the political candidates on current issues. Aditi Sharma '19 started a company called LIME Lab (www.limelab.org or @Lime_Lab on Twitter). It is an organization bringing together girls and women who share an interest in computers, robotics, and technology. It also develops programs for STEM education. Special focus is made on reducing the inequities in STEM education for girls and minorities. The group recently received an invitation to provide technology training in all 22 branches of the Detroit Public Library.

Aditi, along with her younger sister Anjali, has been offering technology training to Detroit area kids since 2015, with an emphasis on girls-only classes. Last summer she offered a weeklong summer camp for girls at the Redford branch of the Detroit Public Library. The course was so well received they were asked to continue the training in all of the branches. Aditi is excited about this opportunity and enjoys sharing her love of technology as well as designing programs and study aids that make complex ideas more easily understood by kids who may not have had any background in programming and technology.
