Vidigami - Our photo sharing software, Vidigami, has been opened for this school year. Parents are invited to view and contribute school event photos to the relevant albums. We're looking for Junior School BBQ photos! The album to upload pictures is under the Junior School group. Below are some pictures people shared from the Lower School Ice  Cream Social.

View this video for background on the software: overview video. More information can be found under the cog icon in the right corner and through the "Success Center" link. An iOS and Android app are available to load pictures taken on your phone. Access to Vidigami is only given to current parents, Upper and Middle school students, and faculty. The security settings are similar to the Portal, in that individuals can only see groups and albums that are relevant to them. The button to Vidigami can be accessed on the Parent Portal main page. You can also login in directly via www.Vidigami.com using your Portal username and password

On Monday, September 24, the Blue & Gold Club held its 41st consecutive golf outing to help raise money for the various athletic initiatives the club supports. Approximately 108 golfers enjoyed the day at Orchard Lake Country Club in spite of the chilly, rainy weather. Besides the 18 holes of golf, the participants enjoyed a buffet lunch and heavy appetizers in the evening while they spent the time bidding on auction items in their silent auction. There was also a 50/50 raffle in which former parent and regular DCDS event photographer, Mark Wright, won a healthy sum of cash. All in all, this year's event was another success thanks to golf chairs Tony Cook and Karl Zimmermann.

GM Design Team Visits Fifth Grade

GM Design Team 2018 from The Buzz on Vimeo.

Dedicated members of the GM design team visited fifth-grade classes. Top designers explained the process of designing a car, which starts with a sketch using colored pencils. Then the design is modified using computer technology. Designers use 3D printers to further advance their design. Another member of the team talked about a sculptor's role in the design process. To demonstrate a 1/5 clay model of a car was shown to the students. Team members explained that when they begin the car designs, they have to think of the consumer in five years since this is how long it takes for a vehicle to go into production. The designers showed how their artistic abilities can be used in a job that designs vehicles driven by millions of people. This talk kicks off the car design unit for the fifth-grade art class taught by Mrs. Nancy Jenkins. Students will now design their own unique car, make a clay model and paint it. Look for these masterpieces at Celebrate the Arts in April! These budding young designers enjoyed the presentation and saw one way how art can be used in a career.

Lower School families, who are also members of the Friends of the Arts Association (FOA), had the opportunity to register and participate in a printmaking class with Lower School art teacher, Melissa Parks. Ms. Parks first talked about two recognized artists in printmaking, Gwen Frostic and Charley Harper. Both are known for their unique nature and wildlife prints. The focus of the workshop was to create a print of a blackbird or robin. Ms. Parks showed the group how to etch their chosen bird in styrofoam, roll paint, and then transfer the image to sheet music. While the parents and children collaborated on their project, Ms. Parks played Blackbird (The Beatles) and various versions of Rockin Robin.

FOA's Art from the Heart Program Continues to be a Yearly Highlight

Thirty-three DCDS student-artists donated original artwork to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, hoping to bring joy and color to the young patients and their families. DCDS and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan held a special ceremony to introduce the artwork.

Art from the Heart was launched in 2002 and has since grown into one of the most celebrated student programs at DCDS. Grace Serra, Art Advisor for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan hand-selects each piece from students in every grade level at the annual “Celebrate the Arts” festival hosted by the Friends of the Arts Association each spring. Since the program started, more than 465 pieces of artwork have been donated, which now line the hallways and patient rooms at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Each year, DCDS’s Friends of the Arts Association provides a grant to frame the students’ creations and hosts a special preview event for the student artists and their families. Friends of the Arts supports the Fine and Performing Arts curriculum, activities and programs of the students attending DCDS. For more information, visit www.dcds.edu/foa.

Mark your calendars to join the Blue & Gold Club in honoring our Class of 2019 Scholar-Athlete award recipients and hear the special guest speaker, Lisa Hallett, Executive Director and Co-Founder, wear blue: run to remember. The dinner will be on Thursday, November 1 at 7:00 PM at the Troy Marriott.

Lisa Hallett is the President and Co-Founder of wear blue: run to remember. On August 25, 2009, Lisa’s husband, CPT John Hallett, was killed when his Stryker was attacked with an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan. Surviving the loss of her husband, best friend, and father of her three young children, Lisa turned to running. An avid runner, she soon found a community that needed the same kind of support that running gave her. Creating wear blue gave Lisa a healthy outlet for her grief and a path to move forward, and she’s committed to sharing that with others. Lisa has an M.Ed.T. from University of Hawaii and a B.A. in English Literature from University of California - Santa Barbara. She completed her fifth ultra-marathon in December 2013, and has set a full marathon PR of 3:37:52. Lisa has completed three Ironman races, with her most recent the Ironman World Championships. Lisa and her three young children reside in DuPont, WA. They are moving forward and loving life, honoring John with every step.

NAEA EXHIBITS WORKS OF ART CREATED BY ART EDUCATORS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

ALEXANDRIA, VA – October 8, 2018 – The National Art Education Association (NAEA) is showcasing artwork from art educators across the country in a juried exhibition at the NAEA Studio & Gallery, located at the association’s headquarters in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. The exhibit will run October 1, 2018 – January 4, 2019.

The exhibit features artworks created by NAEA’s vibrant professional community of visual arts educators, highlighting a portion of the tremendous skill and vision of members worldwide. In addition to being art educators, many NAEA members are exhibiting artists as well. Nationwide, there were 386 submissions from 29 states, and 62 works were selected by jurors for the gallery showing. Sixty additional works were selected by jurors for display in the NAEA Virtual Gallery. Included in this exhibit is our Upper School metals instructor and DCDS alumnus, Jiro Masuda '86. Mr. Masuda is one of two Michigan art educators selected for the exhibit. Congratulations Mr. Masuda!

Submissions were reviewed in the following areas:

  • Originality and Uniqueness
  • Clarity and Meaning
  • Innovation and Creativity
  • Material Usage and Medium Application
  • Quality and Craftsmanship

“Our annual exhibit of works created by art educators creates an opportunity to see the powerful connection between art education and living and working in a visual age,” said Deborah B. Reeve, EdD, executive director of the National Art Education Association. View the current installation and Virtual Gallery online here. Here is a direct link to Mr. Masuda's piece.

Founded in 1947, NAEA is the leading professional membership organization exclusively for visual arts educators. Members include elementary, middle, and high school visual arts educators; college and university professors; university students preparing to be art educators; researchers and scholars; teaching artists; administrators and supervisors; and art museum educators—as well as more than 57,000 students who are members of the National Art Honor Society.
