WordMasters Challenge Results from Junior School

$

A team representing Detroit Country Day Junior School achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™ a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The fifth grade team scored an impressive 164 points out of a possible 200 in the first of three meets this year, placing fourth in the nation.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, third grader Julia Berghea and fifth graders Anirudh Baranwal, Trinity Chen, Vikram Goddla and Nishan Inampudi each earned a perfect score of 20 in the recent meet. Nationally, only 18 sixth graders achieved this result. Other students from Detroit Country Day Junior School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include third grader Harsha Narayan. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by teachers; Angie Charlton, Meera Sundar, Airica Clapper and Jeremy Lublin.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The History Department of Detroit Country Day School proudly announces the establishment of a RHO KAPPA History Honor Society Chapter. Established in 2000, RHO KAPPA is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of History. Through its sponsorship of RHO KAPPA, National Council for the Social Studies hopes to encourage an interest in, understanding of, scholarship in, and appreciation for History. Qualifying students are selected by the Upper School History RHO KAPPA Faculty membership. Juniors and seniors designated as History Scholars by the decision of the History Department Faculty must establish and maintain a significant interest in history, exhibit outstanding academic achievement including a production of major historical high school level dissertation/thesis and uphold the school’s tradition of academic integrity. The thesis/dissertation requirement of the Society can be fulfilled by submission of a major work submitted to any number of national essay contests including, but not limited to: National History Day, The Concord Review, The Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History or The D. Corwin Lincoln Book Prize. Honor Society Student Members will be allowed to wear RHO KAPPA cords at graduation and receive a RHO KAPPA Honor Society Certificate of Membership.

Students seeking additional information should speak with Mr. Kenney – RHO KAPPA Presiding Chair.

Kindergarten Art Exchange with Japanese Students

$
0
0

A group of kindergarten students has been selected for an art exchange with our sister school in Japan. We will be mailing the original “Sweet Treat” drawings to them, and in exchange, the students in Japan will be sending us original artwork. We selected the theme when our sister school was visiting DCDS back in October. The kindergarten students learned about American artist, Wayne Thiebaud. He likes to paint scenes and objects that are familiar to him and likes to make people smile through his art. He worked in a bakery as a boy and became intrigued with the dessert displays. Later in life, he would draw upon those familiar and happy images. Some of his popular paintings include pies, cakes, ice cream, and pastries. We hope our new friends in Japan will enjoy our sweet drawings.
