On the 5th of February, Junior School students learned about and celebrated the Lunar New Year (often called Chinese New Year) during their music classes.
In general music, Mrs. Han talked about new year traditions like "lucky money," introduced the students to East Asian languages and writing, and told stories about her family's history and growing up with five languages in her home. Students watched a video of this year's Lunar New Year celebrations in China and learned to say "Happy New Year" in Chinese and Korean.
In Beginning Strings, third grade student Toby Liu introduced his classmates to this holiday and shared a video featuring traditional Chinese instruments. He planned and taught an activity in which he taught students to write "fortune" in Chinese, which has traditional significance.
