Congratulations to Nick Kalkanis '22, who received a silver medal in the third annual Michigan Design Prize award ceremony, held June 19 at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. The Michigan Design Prize competition was created to highlight the state’s design strengths and to bring visibility to the field of industrial design, which combines engineering with art to create valuable design solutions to problems in society. The 2018 Michigan Design Challenge, open to K-12 students statewide, invited participants to “design a product to help people explore and enjoy Michigan’s parks.” Nick’s invention, the Automated Tour Transporter, helps people with mobility needs enjoy and learn more about the parks they visit.

As a finalist, Nick had the opportunity to work with an industrial design professional to further develop his initial proposal, which was first conceptualized and prototyped in his 8th grade STEAM class, into a marketable product concept. Judges from the Michigan Design Council applauded Nick’s idea for its ability to broaden the appeal of Michigan parks without impacting their natural beauty. Congratulations, Nick!

Melissa Parks, visual arts faculty member at DCDS since 1997 and currently the Lower School art teacher, finds the time to continue her passion as a practicing artist. Currently she is focusing on paintings inspired by contemporary activist artists and the developing dialogue amongst female practitioners. Her personal paintings are on exhibit at the Southfield Public Library on the second floor, August 1- September 30. This show is titled, "What Are You Waiting For?" and it is a series of chairs that are called, "The Waiting Room," which is a metaphor for a place of transition between the physical and mental, where anything can happen. The time of waiting which anticipates change.

She also exhibited at the Annex Gallery in Highland Park mid-August with her daughter, Josie Teachout (2016 DCDS graduate and CCS Fashion Accessory/Fine Arts dual major).
